1st Day
England boasts one of the strongest batting lineups in cricket and few teams can threaten to derail them, yet Pakistan was forced to dig deep and endure long periods of discomfort on what had previously been an ideal batting surface for them. By day four’s end though, wear began showing on the pitch surface and England’s seam attack led by Woakes, Carse and Atkinson made their move against Pakistan batting at their best.
Aamer Jamal and Salman Agha attempted to resist Pakistan’s relentless onslaught but were ultimately dismissed for 61 and 69 respectively, their stubborn resistance only prolonging the game for another few overs and showing that Pakistan’s tail-enders have far from disgraced themselves.
As the game nears its conclusion, England are poised to record their first innings victory over Pakistan since 2016. But this victory won’t bring relief: England require a top-class batting coach to help Babar out of his slump and improve Rizwan’s technique; along with a psychological strategist to calm frazzled minds. Furthermore, England need to address their prominent tactical issues, such as lack of urgency or poor decision-making when under pressure.
2nd Day
At the close of day four of Pakistan vs England Test match, Pakistan appeared doomed. They were at 19-2 with England spinner Jack Leach having picked up two wickets – but Kamran Ghulam and Saim Ayub mounted some staunch resistance, forming an undeterred partnership and delaying England’s inevitable win until Day 5. Their efforts ensured the game went into a fifth day and extended it past England’s imminence victory.
Joe Root and Harry Brook led England’s batsmen from a slow start, soon opening up with some impressive runs that helped break Mohammad Rizwan’s poor stay at bat. England’s bowlers kept up pressure during the second session with some crucial breakthroughs that prevented Pakistan’s attempts at taking control.
The wicket, which had provided little assistance for pacers throughout, showed signs of life during the final session and Ollie Pope decided to introduce spinners for one last time – particularly Leach who immediately put an end to Pakistan’s innings with some precise bowling.
After an extended period of rain, the pitch remained damp but lively enough for batsmen to score runs. Mohammad Rizwan and Imran Khan’s opening partnership of 127 was instrumental in Pakistan reaching 294. But England’s fast bowlers quickly put an end to it all, with Jack Leach taking three wickets within three overs, including Mohammad Amir caught at short third man who had looked dangerous throughout his innings with three sixes and two fours hit from short third man – further prolonging Pakistan’s horror run in Test cricket over six times!
3rd Day
Pakistan versus England cricket matches have long been one of the most intense rivalries across all formats of cricket. Their longstanding rivalry dates back decades, creating many unforgettable moments over the years – whether its an ODI, T20I or Test series; fans are always left enthralled.
Pakistan batsmen showed remarkable resilience despite losing early wickets, thanks to Saud Shakeel’s 82 and their 149-run partnership. Sajid Khan also contributed significantly towards Pakistan’s successful batting effort by showing aggressive tail-end hitting.
Kamran Ghulam’s maiden century on debut was another high point of the day. At 29-years-old, the 29-year-old did well to score an outstanding innings of 155 not out, after being brought in as a replacement for Babar Azam and becoming only the 13th batsman ever to achieve such an feat on Test debut.
England bowlers did well to ease pressure off of the hosts and restrict Pakistan’s batsmen – with Jack Leach picking up two wickets among others such as Matthew Potts, Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir doing an outstanding job at restricting them to an under-par total.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood led his side to a decisive win with an eight-wicket victory before lunch on day three, which secured their series win at home – their first since 2021!
4th Day
As the fourth day neared its conclusion, England were in complete command of this Test match. A tremendous batting effort spearheaded by Harry Brook and Joe Root had put England on track towards victory; their advantage over Pakistan’s challenging second innings total of 221 was substantial and Jack Leach seemed certain to win this series for England.
But Pakistan duo Naseem Shah and Salman Agha have different plans. Even if England win easily, they may at least delay England’s inevitable triumph by refusing to surrender easily.
Leach drops a full ball outside off, it grips sharply and swiftly turns away, with Shah trying to hit it through the line but missing. Jamie Smith immediately becomes alert and removes its bails off for good – which proves devastatingly detrimental to visitors.
England’s batsmen continue to struggle against Pakistan’s turning ball, yet Joe Root is playing with an irrepressibly engaging style that belies his body pains and tired feet. He made history when he scored a double century, which marked a first for England in Pakistan, and shared in an impressive 312 run partnership with Brook.
As they approach the end of the match, both of these pair are well ahead of their opponents’ pace, yet must maintain scoring momentum with quick wickets if they want a historic win.
5th Day
England have made great strides toward their aim of maintaining No. 1 position in the ICC World Test Championship rankings 2024-25 with their win in the opening Test against Pakistan. Now they will look to increase their advantage even further at Multan Cricket Ground during match two.
Pakistan haven’t won a Test series at home for some time. Looking to break this streak in their second Test which starts on Tuesday 15th October on an old surface that should offer spinners some assistance during their bid for victory.
Ollie Pope was quick to commend his bowlers’ performance on Day 1, helping his team get off to an excellent start and build confidence within themselves. It is no easy task defending 550 runs on such an unforgiving pitch; Ollie gave credit to Harry Brook and Joe Root whose excellent innings allowed the England captain and team to seize control of the match.
Brydon Carse was an unexpected star for England in this Test, taking wickets while also contributing crucially with the bat. As an integral member of their squad, he will look to replicate this form in future Tests. Jack Leach, Matt Potts and Shoaib Malik also performed brilliantly and are valuable assets to their respective sides.
Kamran Ghulam made an impactful debut for Pakistan, scoring a half-century on his first Test outing and playing an important role for them as well as being one to keep an eye on in future matches. Keeping his cool under pressure he scored another 50 in Test 2, so watch this youngster closely as they continue their impressive form and keep Pakistan competitive!
