Ivan Schranz capitalized on England’s misfires in defense to put Slovakia ahead! A victory worthy of underdog status.
Trippier attempts to gain ground, but his ball takes an unfortunate nick and is cleared away by Southgate’s team. In response, Eberechi Eze replaces Kobbie Mainoo.
Lukas Haraslin quickly races away from Walker, but his shot is blocked expertly by Marc Guehi. Here’s a look at the England National Football Team vs Slovakia National Football Team Stats.
England
The Three Lions appeared disinterested early, yet rallied from behind with two late goals to secure an exciting 2-1 Euro 2024 quarter-final win at Arena AufSchalke Gelsenkirchen. Gareth Southgate’s side appeared doomed when Slovakia scored through Ivan Schranz; but Jude Bellingham’s stunning overhead kick and captain Harry Kane’s extra time goal provided much-needed hope of survival for Gareth Southgate’s men.
England boasts a roster of young talent with the potential to blossom into world-class players. Kyle Walker and Jordan Pickford, two excellent Euro 2016 performers, will likely form England’s starting centre-back pairing at centre back. Jordan Henderson, Eric Dier, Jesse Lingard as well as many promising youngsters like Tom Cleverley and Kobbie Mainoo provide ample defensive coverage in midfield for England as they also serve as defensive cover alongside promising youngsters such as Tom Cleverley and Kobbie Mainoo who offer added defensive cover at midfield positions.
The national team boasts an outstanding record against Slovakia in both competitive and friendly encounters, having met five times overall in both competitions and Sports Mole having recorded positive outcomes each time they have met.
England last defeated Slovakia in September 2016 through Adam Lallana’s goal, marking Sam Allardyce’s final match as coach. A year later at Wembley they played out another lacklustre stalemate before England triumphantly defeated their neighbours 4-0 during a friendly in March 2019 featuring braces from Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey and Frank Lampard.
Slovakia
The Slovakia national football team represents their country internationally in association football matches. Established after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, this national team has participated in four major tournaments since 1994 and boasts an excellent record against England.
At the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification stage, they earned qualification by beating Slovenia, Northern Ireland and Poland to claim group victory. Once in Brazil for the tournament itself, they performed admirably – finishing second in their group after beating Italy but drawing with Netherlands (an ESPN-dubbed epic matchup).
At Euro 2016, Slovakia made an impression, finishing third in their group which also included England. Ondrej Duda scored their inaugural European Championship goal during a 2-1 victory against Wales. Unfortunately, however, their qualifying efforts proved futile for Euro 2020 qualifying and they were eliminated during group stage play for the first time ever.
At the 2024 UEFA Euro tournament, Slovakia were placed into Group D alongside England, Russia and Wales. Slovakia managed to defeat both of their counterparts 2-1 and Wales 1-0 before being knocked out in 3-0 defeat at Germany – eventual champions!
At Euro 2024’s Round 16 match at Veltins-Arena, teams will face off in an eagerly anticipated encounter that could propel one to advance into the Quarter-Finals. Slovakia is led by Marek Hamsik, Milan Skriniar, and Martin Dubravka; after an inauspicious start they are expected to improve further over time. Among their players there are many who play aggressive football which allows them to exploit any weaknesses in opposing defences while exploiting weaknesses themselves.
Goals
England were in danger of an embarrassing early exit at Euro 2024 after Ivan Schranz took advantage of some shoddy defending to put Slovakia ahead in Gelsenkirchen, but Jude Bellingham produced a moment of brilliance with an unexpected stoppage-time bicycle kick to save them.
Kane described his goal as one of England’s best in history and it helped reignite their performance against Switzerland with an extra-time winner from Harry Kane, securing them a quarter-final tie against them.
1st Minute: Ivan Toney gains space down the left flank before attempting a curl shot that may evade Jordan Pickford but instead hits the crossbar.
3rd Min: Harry Kane misses an easy header from Marc Guehi, leading him to put away the rebound with no chance at goal in an otherwise subpar performance from England.
5th minute: Eberechi Eze is introduced as a late substitute for Kobbie Mainoo and immediately boosts England’s attack, though she may struggle to break through Slovakia’s defense and score goals.
7th Min: Tomas Suslov flies in to challenge Trippier and is shown a yellow card by the referee. 9th Min: Cole Palmer replaced Trippier and immediately made an impactful statement with his direct running, forward driving and willingness to win the ball – becoming an instantaneous striker who should start regularly for England now. Furthermore he set up Bellingham’s goal with an exquisite pass that no-one would have been able to recover from.
Cards
England appeared destined to lose to Slovakia in this Euro 2024 quarter-final, until Ivan Schranz’s opening goal wasn’t enough for Gareth Southgate’s side to make a miraculous comeback late on. Jude Bellingham’s remarkable overhead kick levelled scores during extra time before Harry Kane scored with his header to propel England through into Gelsenkirchen for another quarter-final meeting.
The match was an uneventful affair throughout, with neither side able to break free of each other. There were still moments of quality for neutral spectators to appreciate: Marc Guehi twice stopped Lukas Haraslin from turning low crosses into chances; David Hancko came close to scoring an own-goal for his side; Kieran Trippier cleared away an early strike from Laszlo Benes; while Marc Guehi twice prevented Lukas Haraslin from turning low crosses into goals; while Kieran Trippier cleared an early strike by Laszlo Benes from becoming active.
Early on in extra time, Eberechi Eze used a free kick from Eberechi Eze to apply pressure to Stanislav Lobotka and force him into parrying it away for a corner kick. Later in extra time, Ivan Toney had to head over a cross from Lukas Haraslin and was blocked from scoring another attempt from Lukas Haraslin by Walker.
As the game neared its conclusion, Kane came within inches of hitting a low strike against the left-hand post but his attempt rebounded off of it instead. Another chance presented itself when Kobbie Mainoo and Eze both attempted shots that were turned aside, with Eze running down right trying to sneak behind Slovakia defense but being met well by Peter Pekarik who tackled him successfully.
Chances
Early on, England appeared destined for defeat; many passes went astray and there was no pattern to their play. After Southgate made the half-time switch of Conor Gallagher for Kobbie Mainoo, though, his side began showing improvement.
England showed significant improvement in the second half, creating their first chance on goal within five minutes. Kieran Trippier found space down the left flank before whipping in a cross that reached Jude Bellingham but his header went straight at Martin Dubravka.
Slovakia then press forward, with Peter Pekarik taking a shot from 25 yards that Gary Cahill blocked before it flew over the bar. But Kieran Trippier got in behind to win a corner which was curled away.
At the other end of the field, Phil Foden found himself in an advantageous position on the edge of the box; however, his attempt was deflected wide before Danny Welbeck headed just wide from a set piece.
Time passes quickly before England finally break through, as Danny Welbeck attempts to shoot from close range but his effort is blocked before Harry Kane heads just wide from an amazing Foden free-kick delivery. Kane then heads just wide after another superb Foden strike went in before it hit off the post – an important moment that put England in the lead and ended their 272-minute drought at this major tournament – something only Gareth Southgate could achieve as manager.
