Priyansh Arya’s century
At Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Punjab, CSK-PKKS’ match was one of the most thrilling battles this season – yet one player made headlines due to his fearless hitting ability. Young Delhi batter Priyansh Arya stunned everyone when he scored a remarkable century in just 39 balls – hitting seven fours and nine sixes along the way! Arya made headlines last year for hitting six sixes in one over while playing for South Delhi Superstarz against North Delhi Strikers in the Delhi Premier League. Left-handed batsman Amit Mishra made waves during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament where he became Delhi’s leading run scorer with 222 runs at an average strike rate of 166 in seven innings – which earned him an IPL contract worth Rs 3.8 crore with PKKS, more than three times greater than his base price of Rs 30 lakh.
Arya began his innings in style, smashing his first ball for six. Though dropped in the next over by Khaleel Ahmed, this didn’t deter Arya from continuing his onslaught against CSK bowlers. Arya reached half-century in 19 balls before taking advantage of their powerplay period to launch an attack against opposition bowlers at will.
Arya struck three sixes and four fours off Ravichandran Ashwin in the 13th over, before picking up 23 runs from Matheesha Pathirana for his century off 39 balls! Yusuf Pathan is only other Indian batsman to make this remarkable achievement in less than 40 balls!
Captain Shreyas Iyer was full of praise for Arya’s innings and stated that this is exactly what he expected from his players. He expressed his joy that Arya played freely while not losing his cool when partners at either end were being lost – it truly marked an outstanding innings from this uncapped batter who will no doubt become one to watch for some time to come!
Shashank Singh’s unbeaten 65-run stand
Punjab Kings were left reeling at 154 for six following Priyansh Arya’s record-breaking hundred, needing someone to carry them beyond 200 runs. That man was Shashank Singh; although not as flashy or impressive as Arya, his composed and calculated knock of 52 not out off 31 balls ensured they wouldn’t lose momentum once the initial storm had subsided.
Singh kept PBKS on the offensive, and with help of an unbroken 65-run partnership off 38 balls with Marco Jansen – which led them to an above-par score of 221. Arya had led from the front with his strike rate of over 163, but once Arya fell in 14th over it was up to Singh and Jansen to keep their side moving forward with their scoreboard progress.
CSK took full advantage of CSK’s poor fielding, leaving 11 opportunities uncovered throughout the match – particularly Shashank, who caused Preity Zinta’s reactionary fury at his slip up.
Although they dropped an early catch, the hosts soon began making inroads into CSK’s defence. Arya immediately unleashed Khaleel Ahmed for a six and then took two more off him within that over for his highest ever score of 102 off 61 balls.
Arya was finally dismissed in the 19th over, having done enough to keep PBKS on course towards an impressive total. Following Arya’s departure, however, PBKS seemed poised for collapse but Singh showed his T20 experience by playing intelligently and keeping his innings within its framework.
He welcomed back Ravichandran Ashwin with a six over long on, then hit another six off Matheesha Pathirana for an unfeigned six over cover, giving PBKS much-needed impetus. Alongside Jansen he then hit seven boundaries off five balls from Matheesha Pathirana for an overall total score of 220; unfortunately though they were unable to add any further runs and fell 18 runs short of their target.
Arshdeep Singh’s impressive spell
Arshdeep Singh has been in impressive form for Punjab Kings this season and will play an integral part in their success. The left-arm pacer specializes in death overs and can bowl deliveries of 140kph or faster, winning India the U19 World Cup 2018. Additionally, his economy rate in T20Is stands at just two runs per over.
PBKS’ 20-year-old batsman, Daniel Thomas has been outstanding this season and played an integral part in their three victories. When facing CSK he will likely feature during crucial death overs, with MS Dhoni hoping for an exceptional fielding performance from him as well.
After an inauspicious start, Chennai Super Kings have struggled to post competitive scores over their past few matches and should focus on collecting wins to avoid finishing in the lower half of the table.
At present, they sit ninth in the table and must win at least four of their remaining six matches to guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs. Therefore, this match-up between both teams will be crucial to their chances of securing one of those playoff spots.
In their previous match against CSK, Priyansh Arya’s remarkable century and Arshdeep Singh’s exceptional bowling were instrumental to their side’s 18-run victory despite late wicket losses for both. However, both stars struggled at times during their innings.
Arshdeep Singh made an excellent start for his side by dismissing Shayan Jahangir leg before. Subsequently, he claimed the wicket of Andries Gous and Harmeet Singh.
Arshdeep created another thrilling over by playing cat and mouse with Ben Duckett. As Duckett attempted to reverse-scoop over short fine leg, Arshdeep adjusted his line much wider of off and pitched full ball instead, sending Duckett skying his leading edge with one delivery, followed by slower variations and yorkers in subsequent overs. This proved fruitful as Arshdeep kept up pressure by slowing things down with slower variations and yorkers for another over.
Ahead of the match
At this round’s final match of the IPL, all eyes will be on a dramatic final game between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings with plenty at stake for both teams – Punjab Kings seeking their inaugural win of the season while CSK remain at risk of missing out on playoff spots altogether. A win by Punjab would cement their place within the top four while CSK risk sliding into fifth with yet another loss.
At the start of this match between two sides, both teams participated in an exciting toss between themselves. When home side won and elected to bat first, opening duo of Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh got off to an excellent start with powerful hitting from Arya leading them to 219 runs in 10 overs.
Marco Jansen delivers a fuller ball with pace off to Devon Conway who deftly nudges it to deep midwicket for one. Even with their missed opportunity, PBKS still look set to build on an already impressive total score.
Priyansh Arya has scored an outstanding century off 42 balls on debut – an outstanding feat! His powerful hitting has demonstrated his ability to hit big and punish any threats put his way; while being supported by teammates who are also performing brilliantly.
Chennai Super Kings have had an uneven start to their season and now need to turn things around quickly. MS Dhoni’s performance in the final overs has been cause for concern and this game represents a critical test for their playoff hopes if they lose.
Punjab Kings have bounced back after an early stumble with two consecutive wins to return to form in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). They currently rank second highest run scorers and can extend that streak with another triumph against CSK. Their strong side features quality bowlers such as Yash Thakur, Glenn Maxwell and Yuzvendra Chahal – these players will be crucial in leading them to victory against CSK. Punjab King have the potential to become formidable competitors come the 2018 IPL.
