Afghanistan vs Bangladesh ODI 1
Although Bangladesh lost the toss, they made every effort to post an impressive total on a flat pitch despite losing Tanzid Hasan early on. Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossain Shanto helped set a strong platform before Shanto hit an entertaining half century before succumbing to injury; leaving his lower order struggling too much and Bangladesh eventually falling for 184 in 43.4 overs.
Rashid Khan’s googly was ultimately what did it. A bit full and outside off, it turned sharply to hit bat and stump and throw off control for visitors, who suddenly found themselves on the back foot after having taken control of proceedings earlier on in the innings.
Bangladesh bowlers performed admirably to restrict Bangladesh’s score but Afghanistan’s spinners took control in the final 10 overs. AM Ghazanfar, in particular, picked up two quick wickets that left Bangladesh reeling; his unpredictable turning kept upsetting their batters who couldn’t figure out which way the ball was spinning; Mohammad Nabi provided further support with two wickets himself for Afghanistan during an impressive spell by their hosts.
Take a drinks break now to give the players time to rest up; this could prove crucial in the end!
Bangladesh’s spinners weren’t able to stop Afghanistan completely, but they did pick up enough wickets to keep their team competitive. Though their openers may have made some mistakes with their shots towards the end, they still made up an acceptable total score.
Mohammad Nabi is out with a limp after receiving a hard knock; let’s hope nothing too serious is wrong here; Darwish Rasooli comes on as his replacement.
Afghanistan vs Bangladesh ODI 2
Afghanistan are hoping to complete their first series win against Bangladesh after an impressive display in the opening ODI in Sharjah on Tuesday. After winning by an impressive margin of 92 runs in their own backyard, Afghanistan are confident of sealing an historic win when playing in their second ODI on Saturday against Mohammad Nabi’s side and hope he can continue his good form into this match.
Afghan bowlers did not start off well against the new ball as they leaked many runs, but Rashid Khan, Nangeyalia Kharote and AM Ghazanfar bowled economically to limit any damage done by Rashid’s initial deliveries of loose deliveries – with Rashid reaching 224/7 before his batsmen attempted a comeback but ultimately failed.
Najmullah Hossain Shanto finished on an unbeaten score of 76 while Rahmat Shah was the only other batsman to reach fifty. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi bowlers did an outstanding job as they limited the hosts to 184 over 43.3 overs with left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed taking three wickets, Mustafizur Rahman taking two each and Mehidy Hasan Miraz also picking two wickets each.
Hashmatullah Shahidi of Afghanistan said they believed they could defend 235 on the board, and their bowlers came through. He specifically lauded Mohammad Nabi and AM Ghazanfar who bowled admirably in their second spells.
Afghan batsmen weren’t exactly flawless as they missed several opportunities, yet still managed to amass a respectable total thanks to Rahmat Shah and Nabi’s contributions – particularly Shah’s unbeaten hundred that gave their team a good shot at running chase success.
Afghans will need to be wary with the new ball as Bangladesh’s batsmen have proven capable of scoring big runs. They may take comfort in knowing that Mujeeb and Taskin Ahmed have shown they can dominate when it comes to handling it well. Whoever strikes early and puts pressure on opponents will ultimately emerge victorious.
Afghanistan vs Bangladesh ODI 3
Afghanistan and Bangladesh’s three-match One Day International series is an absolute must-win affair for both teams. Afghanistan have the chance to go ahead in the series when they meet again at Sharjah on Monday; Bangladesh are hoping to avoid an innings defeat. Mohammad Nabi scored an 84-run innings and Allah Ghazanfar claimed six wickets to lead Afghanistan to victory in their opening game win in Afghanistan’s favour.
Bangladesh responded well to their drubbing at South Africa and India and are looking to even up the series when they take to the field on Monday. But they face an uphill task as Afghan hosts; coming off a poor run against South Africa and India with heavy defeats respectively and missing key players like Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Nasum Ahmed due to visa issues has proved tough going for Bangladesh.
Hashmatullah Shahidi will hope his side can make Sharjah their fortress during this three-match series, hoping it can set a tone that can carry them into next year’s Champions Trophy tournament.
Afghanistan’s batting unit struggled to get going early and had to work hard for their runs, yet still managed to reach an respectable total of 263. Thanks to some great performances by their batsmen – Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto top scored with 76 runs off 119 balls while Jaker Ali Anik and Mahmudullah both made contributions of over 60 runs each.
Bangladesh’s bowlers found it challenging to keep pace with Afghan batsmen. Thankfully, however, some impressive catches from Towhid Hridoy and Shoriful Islam helped their bowlers keep pace. Nahid Rana and Mustafizur Rahman each claimed two wickets each.
Though Bangladesh had an uneven start, they eventually managed to come alive thanks to an excellent partnership between Soumya Sarkar and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Unfortunately for them though, their innings suffered from an late collapse which saw them slip from 95/0 to 137/6 before losing eight wickets for 20 runs to finish on 172/9. Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai both made five wicket hauls to help their home team claim victory.
Afghanistan vs Bangladesh T20
Afghanistan won an epic T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh with Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq leading their bowlers with incredible precision to defend a modest target of 115 runs with ease, sparking wild celebrations at Arnos Vale ground in St Vincent.
Bangladesh got off to an encouraging start and reached 27/0 at the conclusion of the Powerplay, but their middle overs struggled, losing three wickets in just 11 balls from 84/1 to 95/6 despite Litton Das’ 41-ball half century providing some hope but wasn’t enough for Bangladesh to reach their first ever semi-final appearance.
Afghanistan batsmen struggled to make any impactful scoreboard contribution; at half time they had managed only 59/3 and Litton fell for 54 shortly thereafter, leaving Soumya Sarkar and Towhid Hridoy helpless as Afghanistan bowlers consistently grabbed key wickets to keep the match close.
Rain stoppages further complicated matters and the equation kept changing – sometimes Afghanistan would lead in DLS par, while sometimes Bangladesh took control. Rashid made his move in the 17th over when he trapped Sarkar LBW on ball five.
Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman soon after joined him as Bangladesh went from 101/3 to 109/6 quickly. Litton continued fighting back but was struck out when an errant shot went straight through him while trying for an overthrow in the penultimate over.
Naveen then struck with four balls remaining to end Bangladeshi batsman Saiful Rahman with one bowl from Naveen’s final over, thus sealing Afghanistan’s victory and assuring second spot in their group as well as knocking Mitchell Marsh-led Australia from contention in this tournament.
