Scorecard
New Zealand are poised to win an historic Test series against India. Needing only 167 runs to do it, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar remain on the crease for India – though New Zealand’s bowlers have managed to contain them long enough for New Zealand’s batsmen to make steady progress towards reaching their target.
India have struggled against spinners despite some strong batting from their final pair. Mitchell Santner took an impressive 7/53 in just 19 overs with varying pace and dip to defeat batsmen at will and cause several collapses as his variations caused chaos with Washington Sundar supporting with four wickets as a superb spin support.
India have shown great character in spite of their batsmen’s poor showing and have demonstrated they can fight back to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, something Australia will look to build upon next month when they host India for another test match.
India vs. New Zealand
India responded heroically after an inauspicious start, bowling Australia out for just 67 runs in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery bowling combined with contributions from Mohammed Siraj and debutant Harshit Rana had their target reeling for good.
In their second innings, the tourists struggled to find their feet and were quickly on the verge of defeat before Yashasvi Jaiswal played an amazing knock of 161 runs to help turn things around and put themselves back in a strong position. She was supported by KL Rahul (77 runs), Devdutt Padikkal (25) and Washington Sundar (25) as they finished on 487/6.
India was on the verge of an innings defeat after their batsmen suffered a catastrophic collapse during the morning session, losing all three wickets within just four balls due to poor shot selection by Rohit Sharma (10) and KL Rahul (33) who both attempted unnecessarily risky shots that eventually cost them wickets.
Shubman Gill was caught at gully by Marsh off Mitchell Starc’s bowling, shortly before tea, before returning after the break and dismissing Shikhar Dhawan for a duck and Shakib Al Hasan for golden duck, with the very next ball to strike again to remove Kohli with another stunning six. A few more overs later and it was all but over for India; their poor showing will need to change for them to retain their number one ranking in Test cricket.
First innings
Devon Conway and Will Young of New Zealand remain solid at the crease, steadily building an innings for the visitors. Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav’s tight bowling is creating chances for batsmen; most recently Conway managed a four off Jasprit Bumrah in an over.
Sarfaraz Khan comes out to bat and faces an uphill task of turning around this innings. To succeed and help his team win the match, he must play an amazing innings and deliver.
Tail enders were desperately trying to hold on when Bumrah managed to launch one over deep third fielder and over his head, striking first. Umpires checked if ball hit ground first; which it did and this proved an incredible gaffe by the keeper.
Rachin Ravindra comes on to bowl for India. In a bid to take quick wickets, his first delivery hits hard and goes past first slip without him being able to collect it.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and elected to bat first at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They lost two early wickets but managed to recover thanks to Devon Conway and Will Young who helped their side reach 245/3 after 31.2 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar both took four-wicket hauls for India as they bowled New Zealand out for 235 in their first innings; India suffered as their batsmen did not perform at Wankhede and are yet to reverse recent poor form at home.
Second innings
New Zealand Cricket Team won its maiden ICC Champions Trophy title back in 2000 and went on to finish as runners-up at 2009 South African edition and semi-finalists at 2006 Indian tournaments respectively. They never managed to bring home victory however and hope this game can change that.
Yashasvi Jaiswal led his side into bat since lunch with a superb innings that eventually saw him caught off Washington Sundar by Glenn Phillips for 77, his fourth half-centuries in an ODI and second only to Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara for most such fifty-plus scores in this format.
Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin delivered devastating blows against New Zealand on Day 2 of the third Test in Mumbai, as they collapsed to 171/9 at stumps on Day 2. Jadeja started off by uprooting Tom Latham’s stumps off his first ball before going on to remove Daryl Mitchell and Will Young as resistance players – leaving New Zealand in pursuit of an unlikely target of 216 for victory.
Ashwin struck a hat-trick of wickets to bring about their collapse from 136/3 to 181/9 as Ashwin ran through Jaiswal, Sam Whiteman and Colin de Grandhomme in rapid succession. Matt Henry then took Sodhi at the non-strikers’ end from Sodhi, ending any hope of recovery by the long tail.
Once New Zealand are in control of the series, New Zealand captain Tom Latham will be determined to seal it at their Wankhede Stadium home ground on Thursday in front of their fans and claim victory before Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli make their entrance on to the field.
Third innings
Daryl Mitchell and Will Young have guided New Zealand back from its early dip with an impressive partnership that’s slowly building. Spinners continue to apply pressure, yet batsmen seem able to hold out.
Maiden over, Pant gets an enormous edge that was saved by an amazing dive from the fielder at long off, after reviewing it he reviews but the decision stands. Pant then attempts a paddle sweep and gets another edge which does not hold, while reviewing again but the decision stands.
India need 259 runs to win the Test match at Wankhede Stadium and it looks increasingly unlikely they’ll do it. Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill remain India’s last recognizable batting duo and they remain winless since 2012.
Santner remains New Zealand’s destruction expert, sending back Rishabh Pant for a duck, wicket-less Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli lbw in consecutive innings – on their way to creating their first whitewash in India over three or more matches!
India missed an excellent opportunity to finish off their match on Day 3, losing both openers quickly. Virat Kohli tried playing turn against spinners but made contact with his wrong foot and was adjudged leg before. Washington Sundar soon followed suit, providing some devastating spin bowling which helped Jadeja and Sundar share seven wickets to keep India at bay.
