Mumbai Indians vs. Royal Challengers Bengaluru
MI and RCB have squared off 33 times throughout the history of IPL, with MI winning 19 and 14 victories respectively. This match at Wankhede Stadium will be crucial for both sides.
RCB have started their season off well, winning two of four matches on the road while Mumbai Indians have struggled at home.
MI opener Ryan Rickelton had been struggling to get going, but finally hit Krunal Pandya for a huge six. Unfortunately for RCB however, this wicket could prove devastating as Ryan Rickelton attempted to go for quick single. This blow could prove decisive and give them the advantage they need in the chase for victory.
Before the match began, much speculation surrounded whether RCB would sign Jasprit Bumrah; now they have done so and Bumrah and Kohli will provide one of the highlights of this matchup.
Phil Salt with an exquisite cover drive off Trent Boult that lands perfectly within the boundaries. Phil looks extremely dangerous.
Hardik Pandya loses his wicket! While trying to go for a big shot, but misfires and misses, and Yash Dayal takes the catch at fine leg. MI are 4-down but still hope for an unlikely comeback as Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes on for one final over.
2025 IPL
On March 22, the 2025 Indian Premier League got underway at Eden Gardens Stadium with reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as part of its 18th edition – featuring 10 teams across 13 venues across India.
Format remains unchanged with teams playing each of the nine other teams in their group twice and all other four once, before progressing to playoffs where they’ll face either the winner of Qualifier 1 or loser of Qualifier 2, before finally competing in a final on June 3rd.
KKR and RCB have had an intense rivalry in recent seasons, each side winning one match each. Both will look to build upon their impressive starts to the campaign by beating each other, hoping a victory may boost their chances of finishing at the top of their respective groups.
Before their upcoming clash, both RCB and MI have made significant adjustments to their coaching staffs. RCB have replaced Faf du Plessis with Rajat Patidar who should bolster both batting and bowling departments of their side; on the other hand KKR have appointed Mahela Jayawardene as head coach to replace Mark Boucher.

Match 21
At Wankhede Stadium, both teams engaged in an exciting high-scoring battle that ended up favoring Royal Challengers Bangalore by 12 runs. Virat Kohli scored an excellent 67 off 42 to help RCB post 221/5. In reply, MI struggled early and were reduced to 57/2 by end of Powerplay batting session before an incredible partnership between Rohit Sharma and Devdutt Padikkal turned the tide, taking their side past 200 runs for victory and into a comfortable position.
Padikkal was initially successful with a short ball to open his bowling, guiding it over square leg for a single run. Bumrah then bowled another full one on leg which Rohit pulled to deep midwicket for another four. Later in the over, Rohit hit straight drive to deep midwicket to add one more run from it.
Santner proves instrumental in taking out one of the early wickets of an innings with only five balls on the field, when Padikkal attempts a lofted shot down the ground which hits long off and Santner attempts a lofted shot up the middle that holes out to long off. Padikkal then attempts to play off his legs but misses and is caught by Ryan Rickelton at long off.
Pandya brothers take the crease, with the elder making an impressive start by smashing Hazlewood for two sixes and four runs in his opening over with MI at 71/1. Later he amps it up even more by hitting seven sixes off six balls in 14 overs – something no other batsmen did at this stage in their innings.
Wankhede Stadium
Wankhede Stadium hosted an exciting encounter that ended with an explosive finale as Mumbai Indians were denied victory despite Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma’s 89-run partnership for Mumbai Indians with Royal Challengers Bangalore winning by 12 runs off the final ball for their first win at this legendary ground since 2015. Additionally, this result guaranteed top four status and secured them three-point advantage over Delhi Capitals.
RCB’s bowlers were helped by heavy dew, making the surface slow and difficult for batsmen. Rohit Sharma struggled early in his innings before succumbing cheaply for 17.
However, they refused to throw in the towel and kept fighting during their run chase; ultimately succumbing to death bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, and Krunal Pandya who showed great skill upon returning to his former club.
MI’s lower order fell behind an impressive total by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), led by Virat Kohli who scored four boundaries to take his personal T20 run count past 13,000 and become the fastest to 6000 runs in IPL history. Despite Bumrah’s comeback from injury, their lower order ultimately failed them in this matchup.
As Kohli neared his next milestone, Deepak Chahar tempts him into making an uncharacteristically rash stroke with a length delivery from him that ends up falling straight to Tim David at long on for six. Salt and David put on an outstanding 20-run stand before Naman Dhir’s big swing was taken by the fence instead.
As such, MI needed 19 runs off two balls to force a super over. But Krunal’s slower and fuller ball was enough to remove Santner from play in just the first delivery and Mitchell Chahar in just the second, leaving just 19 needed from just 19 deliveries remaining – prompting an eruption of joy from their captain as RCB closed out their win with ease.
