Timeline
Pakistan and Bangladesh’s centuries-long cricket rivalry is always captivating, from young fans dreaming of sixes to adults reliving glory days – it has captured generations of fans around the globe and produced unforgettable cricketing spectacles.
But this storied rivalry has had its share of ups and downs – Test thrashings, ODI whitewashes, upsets along the way – leading up to Bangladesh claiming a series victory in 2024.
Beginning in 1986 at the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh played its inaugural ODI against Pakistan – even though they lost, this battle marked the beginning of Bangladesh’s journey from obscurity to international relevance.
Over the subsequent decades, both sides have gone through ups and downs, yet their competitive spirit never wavered. Although COVID-19 may have interrupted touring plans temporarily, once play resumed the desire for victory between these two nations was undiminished.
Saim Ayub struck again, dismissing Jaker Ali for five with a mistimed shot into Mohammad Nawaz’s hands at long-off. Before then, Jaker and Shamim alternated strikes between singles and riskier shots to keep the scoreboard ticking in spite of pressure from bowler Jahangir Khan.
Tanzim Hasan Sakib joins the crease and Pakistan’s bowlers continue their pressure with disciplined deliveries and sharp fielding. Ayub bowls a probing line with variation to induce false shots and test out middle order defences.
Fakhar Zaman attempts a big shot off the fifth ball, only to hit out to long-on. Later, Shaheen Afridi successfully traps Salman Agha behind using an exquisite slower ball that deflects off his bat’s toe-end and dislodges the bails – forcing an error by Fakhar Zaman that ultimately proves fruitful for her team’s cause.
Bangladesh completed their Powerplay, looking to accelerate after losing an early wicket. Mushfiqur Rahim’s impressive century anchored their triumphant series victory and gave Mushfiqur Rahim his maiden Test century on Pakistan soil, inspiring their triumphant series win and earning them their maiden Test series victory there ever.
Matches
Pakistan successfully defended a modest total with discipline, setting up an exciting final matchup between them and India. Haris Rauf led with an incredible 3/33 performance while Bangladesh batsmen struggled to form partnerships during an tense encounter.
Game is tied, with only one wicket between both teams. A win will secure their place in the final against India; an unsuccessful performance would result in going home empty-handed.
Fakhar Zaman had managed a single before being bowled by Taskin Ahmed’s left-arm pacer, who hit Fakhar on the back foot before sending the ball straight towards long-on where Rishad Hossain took an easy catch.
Taskin Ahmed continued his successful performance by bowling Sahibzada Farhan who was caught at backward point by Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
Shamim Hossain delivers Bangladesh a blow with her miscue against Bangladesh. A slower delivery hits off-stump, forcing Bangladeshi batsman Shafiul Islam to attempt a reverse sweep which backfires and deflects off her toe-end into fielders’ arms at backward point.
Pakistan are in danger after losing two wickets within one over. Saim Ayub attempts to take on Mahedi Hasan but misses with an over-flat delivery that hits Rishad Hossain at mid-on and crashes into his hands instead.
Taskin has put the Bangladesh batsmen through an intensive ordeal with his probing line and variation, forcing them to mistime shots while failing to rotate strike in this crucial stage of the innings.
Bangladesh are playing safe cricket, defending good-length balls and tapping safely to the infield. Their opening pair are yet to form a partnership and Nurul Hasan took two singles off Abrar Ahmed’s over before edgeing another googly past the slips for another run – it will be difficult for Bangladesh to make it through to Sunday’s final with such a rapid loss of wickets from both teams. A victory by Pakistan would mark their first Super Fours win since 2010; additionally it would mean facing India against each other in Sunday’s final.
Squads
Pakistan Cricket Board, as the governing body for international cricket in Pakistan and a Full Member of the International Cricket Council. Their national side represents them internationally as part of ICC’s Emerging Economies Group.
Pakistan are struggling to gain any traction against a disciplined Bangladesh attack on a slow pitch in Dubai, as their bowlers struggle to establish any momentum of their own.
Fakhar Zaman and Sahibzada Farhan remain wary against Taskin Ahmed’s seam and swing bowling; who makes inroads into their defence through short deliveries of probing length.
However, not everything was bad for the hosts as Zaman and Farhan used singles around the field while playing smartly against spin. Nawaz Hussain made an appearance, but his shot against Abrar miscued; Parvez Hossain Emon made an excellent reverse cup catch at covers to save Nawaz from further mishap.
Shaheen Afridi replaces Nawaz, who scored 25 off 15 balls before being caught at long-on by Mahedi Hasan. Unfortunately for Pakistan’s batsmen however, their fragile batting remains a source of worry, and an appeal against Mohammad Haris for caught behind was upheld upon review.
Shamim and Tanzim offered some respite against an aggressive Pakistan attack; taking one-off singles while avoiding risky shots on an unstable surface, they served as an encouraging glimmer of resistance for their lower order team mates.
Taskin remains successful at restricting runs with his mix of good-length deliveries and variations, yet Bangladesh batsmen use their adept footwork to pick gaps consistently in his bowling. Haris adds two runs while Faheem Ashraf was caught off him as well.
But Bangladesh’s lower order are in no hurry to panic and continue their effort toward reaching a respectable total. Their innings eventually implodes with Abrar claiming three wickets in his over to leave them at 124 for 9.
However, Bangladesh can take solace from having reached this stage of the tournament after such a trying start and also secured their highly-anticipated final clash against India.
Results
Bangladesh have suffered two quick wickets but hope still lies within. Shaheen and Tanzim’s steady batting has given them confidence, taking singles and twos while using their feet to nuzzle deliveries past fielders and pick gaps consistently.
Their lower order has held strong against disciplined bowling, even after losing Nurul due to an LBW appeal; Bangladesh are steadily moving toward an impressive total.
Abrar Ahmed puts the batsmen through an intense testing session with his mixture of pace and spin bowling, prompting Shaheen to attempt an over-long-on shot which only manages to find its target at deep midwicket. Abrar continues to bowl economically until Jahir Ali executes an expertly judged run-out to stop Bangladesh’s progress.
Shaheen produced another superb shot! He sent Abrar’s slower delivery sailing over long-on for an incredible six. Meanwhile, left-hander Rotar continues his solid performances by striking smart singles and twos in order to reach fifty off 40 deliveries.
Fakhar Zaman and Sahibzada Farhan make an early effort at scoring on this grass-covered pitch, however a pitched-up delivery from Taskin induces an edge towards long off that slices to fielder at long off and Bangladesh’s top order begin to falter.
Taskin continues his tight line and length delivery, using flight and spin to test both Sahibzada and Fakhar’s batsmen. Both fail to connect with his short deliveries: Sahibzada edges his ball behind to slip while Fakhar attempts to drive one googly but gets an inside edge caught at backward point.
Abrar Ahmed returns to the attack, testing batters with speed and spin. His persistence pays off when Jahir Ali hits a leg-before toiler that leaves Bangladesh on the edge of collapse. A few late runs from Shaheen and Tanzim allow them to narrow the deficit, but in order to reach the final they must collect seven more wickets; only then can their poor Asia Cup record come to an end! However, such feats would need extraordinary performance against Pakistan’s superiority in Super-4 format.
